TIRANA, July 17 – Archaeologists will soon resume excavations at the medieval city of Sarda on Shurdhah Island in Lake Vau i Dejës as part of the Albanian-French project The River Drin Valley in the Middle Ages.
The project has documented the city’s structures and traced its development during the medieval period. Earlier excavations uncovered a new defensive wall. The discovery suggests that Sarda had a three-ring fortification system.
Meanwhile, Shkodër Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage Director Helidon Sokoli said the archaeological mission will begin in late August and continue until mid-September. He added that researchers will continue work on the highest part of the hill, where they are documenting one of the city’s earliest churches.
In addition, Sokoli said the team expects to complete the church’s documentation this year and determine its exact date of construction.
Finally, Albanian and French institutions jointly lead the project to uncover more of the history of one of northern Albania’s most important medieval centres. Earlier, workers cleared vegetation across the site to prepare the area for the new excavation campaign.
