According to reports, after confessing to the act, the 53-year-old claimed that he became angry and attacked his wife because she had irritated him. Once discharged from the hospital, he is expected to be taken before prosecutors. The couple’s children have also given statements in connection with the case.

According to the forensic examination, the stab wound to the 44-year-old woman’s neck was deep, with the blade reaching and penetrating her right lung, causing severe internal and external bleeding. No other injuries were found on her body, and her death is believed to have occurred very quickly, approximately three to five minutes after the stabbing. Reports indicate that the knife used was approximately 20 centimeters long.

The woman had decided to separate from her husband and had scheduled a meeting with her lawyer for Thursday to proceed with divorce proceedings. However, she was killed by her husband one day before the appointment.

Her lawyer spoke about the history of domestic violence the 44-year-old woman had allegedly endured, revealing that an incident in 2022 was not the only one and that there had been other assaults by her husband.

“The victim had been assaulted many times by her husband. It was not only the incident in 2022,” she said, describing what she said was a pattern of violence that had continued over time.

Evgenia Kolias’ lawyer also addressed the reasons why victims of domestic violence may find it difficult to leave abusive relationships, particularly emphasizing financial factors.

“Victims often do not leave for financial reasons,” she noted, explaining that in Evgenia Kolias’ case, there was also the issue of her residence permit, as “the main criterion is income.”

According to the lawyer, the husband’s jealousy and the woman’s efforts to achieve financial independence were behind the incidents of domestic violence.

“Jealousy and her financial independence, which she had been trying to achieve throughout all these years, were the cause of the domestic violence,” she said.

Particularly distressing was the lawyer’s account concerning Evgenia Kolias’ son, who took his mother to the hospital. According to her, the young man was in such a state of shock that during the journey he believed his mother was still speaking.

“The son, while taking her to the hospital, thought because of the shock that his mother was still speaking,” she said.

At the same time, the lawyer said that organizations had already expressed interest in supporting the children.

“Organizations have contacted me to offer assistance to the children,” she said.

The lawyer also called for particular care regarding the publication of images related to the case in order to protect the children, specifically asking that photographs and footage of the family home not be shown.

In the village of Dialambi, residents spoke highly of the 44-year-old woman, describing her as a devoted mother who took care of her family. For this reason, she worked seasonally on the Greek islands during the summer months. This year, she had been working on Thassos and had returned home to celebrate her 16-year-old daughter’s birthday.

According to reports, the 53-year-old was taking medication and had previously been admitted to a psychiatric clinic, although it was later determined that he did not require further hospitalization.

In 2022, while the couple were in Crete, the woman had reported him for domestic violence. Although he was arrested, he was later released. This was reportedly not the only occasion on which he verbally abused or behaved violently toward his wife, as other incidents are believed to have occurred over the years. The 44-year-old had therefore decided to seek a divorce.

A relative of the 53-year-old, however, described him as “a good man whom we never expected to do something like this,” adding that the family knew about arguments between the couple but never imagined that he would kill his wife.

The killing occurred around midday on Wednesday, when the 53-year-old stabbed his 44-year-old wife in the neck while their 16-year-old daughter and 19-year-old son were inside the house.

The teenage girl witnessed her mother die in front of her, while the 19-year-old son picked his mother up and rushed her to the hospital in an attempt to save time. However, she was pronounced dead there.

Immediately after the killing, the 53-year-old stabbed himself and consumed an unknown quantity of liquid in an apparent attempt to take his own life, but survived.
