Filip Shiroka remembered as a voice of Albania’s National Awakening

TIRANA, August 3 – Albania marks the anniversary of the birth of poet and patriot Filip Shiroka, one of the leading literary voices of the Albanian National Awakening whose work championed national identity and independence.

Born in Shkodra on August 3, 1859, Shiroka devoted his poetry and journalism to patriotism. He promoted national awareness and supported Albania’s struggle for independence from Ottoman rule. Later, he became head of the Albanian society “Brotherhood of Albanians in Egypt,” where he continued his cultural and patriotic work.

Meanwhile, Shiroka lived in exile in Lebanon and later in Egypt. Despite the distance, he closely followed developments in his homeland. He also worked with prominent Albanian figures, including Faik Konica, Andon Zako Çajupi and Nikollë Ivanaj.

His literary work reflected his longing for Albania and his admiration for the country’s history. His collection Zani i zemrës (The Voice of the Heart) includes the well-known lyrical poems Shko dallëndyshe (Go, Swallow) and Dallëndyshe eja (Come, Swallow).

In addition, Shiroka made a significant contribution to Albanian journalism. He published more than 70 poems and prose works in the magazine Albania, using literature to encourage national consciousness and preserve the Albanian language and cultural identity.
