Finance Minister Malaj: Albania a regional leader in economic growth and stability

TIRANA, June 16 – Finance Minister Petrit Malaj said Albania continues to rank among the most stable economies in the region. He said the country combines economic growth with the lowest inflation rate in the Western Balkans.

Malaj referred to Eurostat harmonised inflation data for April 2026. The data show inflation in Albania at 2.8%, the lowest in the region. Ministry of Finance figures show higher rates in Serbia and Montenegro at 3.6%, the European Union at 3.2%, North Macedonia at 5.7%, Bosnia and Herzegovina at 6.8%, and Kosova at 7.5%.

He said economic performance cannot rely on a single indicator. Broader factors affecting citizens and businesses must also be assessed. The Albanian economy recorded 3.4% growth in the latest period. Inflation pressures remained under control. Malaj described this combination as a key sign of macroeconomic stability.

Low inflation preserves purchasing power. It also ensures more predictable costs for businesses. It creates a more favourable investment environment, Malaj said. He added that international financial institutions have positively assessed Albania’s economy, supported by rising investment, tourism expansion, domestic consumption, and improved fiscal indicators.

He also said regional economies are interconnected. Growth in neighbouring countries contributes to Western Balkan stability. “The economy is not an isolated island with local impact. Trade exchange, production volumes, and development priorities are all regional issues. Economic development in Kosova and other neighbours is directly beneficial for regional stability and in the interest of every citizen. The use of clear economic facts as propaganda against the government and Albania is, in the simplest terms, a low and anti-Albanian act,” he said.

Latest data confirm that Albania maintains macroeconomic stability in a regional and European environment still marked by uncertainty and inflationary pressures. The country remains among the best-performing economies in the region.
