“Flamuri i Arbërit” Magazine Marks 143 Years of History

On July 20, 1883, the monthly political, social, cultural and literary magazine “Flamuri i Arbërit” was first published in Corigliano Calabro, Italy.

Jeronim De Rada, one of the most important figures of 19th-century Albanian literature and the Arbëresh community, founded the magazine.

Known as the “father of Albanian journalism,” De Rada also published the first Albanian-language newspaper, “Shqiptari i Italisë” (L’Albanese d’Italia), in 1887.

Through “Flamuri i Arbërit,” De Rada promoted the Albanian national cause, supported the ideals of the League of Prizren and called for the protection of Albanian lands and identity.

The magazine played an important role in introducing Albania to Europe as an ancient nation with rich traditions. It also opposed foreign efforts to divide Albanian territories and became a patriotic voice for Albanians and the Arbëresh community.

De Rada maintained correspondence with prominent Albanian figures, including Thimi Mitko, Zef Jubani, Sami Frashëri, Elena Gjika and Dora d’Istria, as well as with foreign scholars interested in Albania.

“Flamuri i Arbërit” remains an important symbol of Albanian cultural, literary and national history.
