FM Hoxha condemns Serbian minister’s Kosova statement over ethnic cleansing remarks

TIRANA, July 14 – Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha criticised a statement by Serbian Minister for Public Administration and Local Self-Government Snezhana Paunovic regarding Kosova.

Paunovic said that, if she had been in the position of Slobodan Milosevic, she would have carried out “ethnic cleansing of Kosova in 1998”.

In a reaction on platform X, Hoxha described the statement as unacceptable and shocking. He said it offended the victims of the war and contradicted European values.

Meanwhile, the Albanian minister said attempts to justify or normalise crimes against humanity damage reconciliation efforts in the region. He added that such statements fuel distrust and reopen wounds from the past.

Hoxha stressed that Serbia, Kosova and the wider region need responsibility and reflection to build lasting peace. He said reconciliation cannot rely on statements that glorify policies linked to suffering and tragedy.

According to the minister, the region can build a common European future only through respect for victims, recognition of the past and sincere commitment to cooperation.
