Foreign minister says Albania on track for European Union membership by 2030

TIRANA, May 14 – Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha told parliament on Wednesday that Albania remains on track for European Union membership by 2030 if the current pace of reforms continues. He made the remarks during discussions on a draft resolution on Albania’s European integration process.

Hoxha said European Union support for Western Balkans enlargement remains broad and consolidated. He added that Albania’s relations with the European Union and member states are now closer and more concrete than ever before. According to him, the enlargement approach has not changed since the publication of the latest progress report and continues to represent a strategic priority.

The minister stressed that the accession process remains merit-based and depends on concrete reform results. He said the European Union has positively assessed Albania’s recent progress and now considers the country one of the two priority candidates in the enlargement process alongside Montenegro.

Hoxha also referred to the goal of concluding technical negotiations by 2027. He said full membership by 2030 remains achievable if Albania maintains the current reform momentum. He added that authorities are currently reviewing the European Commission report on interim benchmarks and said member states have not blocked the process.

According to Hoxha, Albania does not formally participate in internal European Commission discussions as long as it remains a candidate country. He also called for a constructive climate of dialogue and cooperation throughout the integration process.
