George Orwell’s literary classic “1984” will be staged at the Kujtim Spahivogli National Experimental Theatre in a co-production with the Shkodër’s Migjeni Theatre.
Directed by Dino Mustafic and adapted for the stage by Jeton Neziraj, the production will run on October 16, 17, 18 and 22, 23, 24 and 25.
The play explores control, freedom and the manipulation of truth. It also reflects on contemporary life, where surveillance, information control, language manipulation and technology play an increasing role.
The story follows Winston Smith, an employee at the Ministry of Truth who rewrites history according to the authorities’ demands. His doubts, memories and search for truth bring him into conflict with a system that seeks to control both individual actions and thoughts. His secret relationship with Julia becomes an act of rebellion and an attempt to preserve a private space in a society where nothing remains truly private.
Meanwhile, Mustafic presents the novel as a theatrical universe rather than a literal recreation. A small cast moves between citizens and authorities, victims and executioners. The production explores conflicts between memory and erasure, truth and manipulation, intimacy and control, and language and silence.
The cast includes Ema Andrea, Rafael Hoxhaj, Eva Gjika, Jozef Shiroka, Adriana Tolka and Nikolin Ferketa.
