TIRANA, July 16 – Albania’s Parliament reviewed an agreement with Germany that will support a €13.5 million food safety project for 2026–2030, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Andis Salla said on Thursday.
Salla presented the bill ratifying the 2025 Technical Cooperation Agreement with Germany. He said the agreement provides the legal basis for implementing the EU4Food Safety project.
Meanwhile, the minister described the initiative as a strategic tool to modernise Albania’s food safety system and support the country’s European Union accession process. He said the project will strengthen inspection authorities, improve laboratory capacity, harmonise legislation with EU standards and help Albania meet the closing benchmarks of Chapter 12.
In addition, Salla said Germany will contribute a €1 million grant, while the European Union will provide €12.5 million. The combined funding totals €13.5 million for the 2026–2030 period.
He added that the project will provide not only financial support but also technical expertise and best practices from EU member states.
Finally, Salla noted that Chapter 12 is among the most demanding chapters of Albania’s EU accession negotiations because it covers food safety, animal health, plant protection and public health. He said the project will help move from legislative alignment to effective implementation of EU standards.
