TIRANA, September 7 – Gjirokastër Castle attracted 200,000 visitors from January through August, Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu said on Sunday. The figure reflects growing interest in one of Albania’s most visited tourist destinations.
Visitors from Albania and abroad continue to choose Gjirokastër for its history, architecture, landscape and gastronomy. Kociu described the castle as a true magnet for tourists and a valuable part of Albania’s cultural heritage.
“Tourist Albania, with another figure that clearly speaks of its success. Together, towards new records,” Koçiu said.
The castle stands on a hill about 370 metres above sea level, slightly separated from the mountain. It is 75 metres wide and 500 metres long. Five large towers strengthen its walls.
The entrance area features a cannon gallery and a collection of weapons dating from the early period of their use through the First and Second World Wars. The castle continues to draw visitors seeking to explore the history and heritage of Gjirokastër.
