Minister of Justice Toni Gogu held his first meeting with the new leadership of the National Bar Association in Tirana.
First, both sides focused on strengthening institutional cooperation in the justice sector. They also discussed the implementation of new commitments following Albania’s signing of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer.
Moreover, Gogu emphasized that an independent legal profession is a key pillar of the rule of law. He stated that it guarantees citizens’ access to defense, representation, and justice.
In addition, he highlighted that cooperation between institutions is not optional but essential. As a result, he stressed that when lawyers work freely, citizens benefit directly.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed next steps for implementing the Convention, strengthening free legal aid, and advancing justice reform. The participants also agreed to establish a joint working group with a clear mandate and timeline.
Finally, Gogu underlined that cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and the Bar Association is a fundamental condition for the proper functioning of the justice system.
