Gonxhja: Archaeological Discovery in Strikçan Among Five Finalists for International “Palmyra” Award

A monumental tomb discovered in Strikçan, Bulqizë, has been selected among the five finalists for the international “Palmyra” Award and the “Special” Public Award at the Borsa Mediterranea del Turismo Archeologico (BMTA).

The Institute of Archaeology led the project that uncovered the monumental tomb. Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja announced the nomination and highlighted its importance for Albania’s archaeological heritage.

The Albanian discovery will compete alongside major archaeological finds from Pompeii, Vulci, Taposiris Magna and Herakleia of Latmos. The selection places Strikçan among a group of important archaeological discoveries from the Mediterranean region.

Meanwhile, the prestigious ceremony and event will take place from October 29 to November 1. The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports will participate together with the Butrint Management Foundation (BMF) and will present a dedicated stand for archaeological tourism.

The stand will promote Albania’s archaeological heritage and destinations. It will also showcase the country’s potential to develop cultural and archaeological tourism.

At the same time, Gonxhja called on citizens to support the Albanian discovery in the race for the “Special” Public Award. The public vote will give Albania an opportunity to further promote the Strikçan discovery on an international stage.

The nomination also highlights Albania’s growing presence in international archaeological and cultural tourism initiatives. It offers another opportunity to present the country’s archaeological heritage to visitors and professionals from across the Mediterranean.
