Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja highlighted record figures at Tirana International Airport and warned that political uncertainty could affect both tourism and the national economy.
According to Gonxhja, the airport recorded its highest daily traffic on May 30. On that day, 51,420 passengers traveled through the airport, while 293 aircraft movements took place. As a result, Albania further strengthened its position as one of the region’s most attractive tourist destinations.
Moreover, Gonxhja pointed to the airport’s growing capacity. This year, the airport can handle up to 5,200 passengers during peak hours. By comparison, it handled only 1,181 passengers per hour in 2019.
Therefore, the minister described these figures as proof of strong investment and improved operational efficiency. He also stressed that Albania must continue to support tourism through long-term and sustainable investments.
In addition, Gonxhja called for more accommodation facilities, modern hotels, and tourist resorts. He also urged continued investment in infrastructure and service quality.
However, the minister expressed concern about the impact of recent protests. He warned that uncertainty could harm not only tourism but also the wider Albanian economy, where tourism plays a key role.
Meanwhile, tourism industry representatives shared similar concerns. They reported that recent developments have affected the number of tourist packages sold so far.
Furthermore, they noted that international tour operators have received questions from clients worried about instability in the country. Consequently, some travelers may hesitate before choosing Albania as a holiday destination.
Enrik Mehmeti, head of the Albanian Tourism Association, said that tourists prefer stable destinations. Therefore, he urged all stakeholders to protect Albania’s image as a safe and welcoming place for visitors.
Despite these concerns, tourism officials remain optimistic. They believe that continued investment and stability will help Albania maintain its strong growth in the tourism sector.
