A new chapter in the European Union’s diplomatic representation in Albania begins this Wednesday. Sofia Moreira de Sousa officially takes office as the EU Ambassador to Tirana, following the end of Italian diplomat Silvio Gonzato’s mandate.
The Portuguese diplomat’s first institutional engagement will be at the Presidency of the Republic, where she will present her credentials to President Bajram Begaj. The ceremony will formally mark the beginning of her mandate in Albania.
Moreira de Sousa takes up the post with an established career in European diplomacy. Before being appointed to Tirana, she headed the European Commission Representation in Portugal, while earlier in her career she represented the European Union as Ambassador to Cabo Verde.
Her appointment comes at a time when Albania-EU relations and the European integration process remain among the key issues on the country’s political and diplomatic agenda.
