Gonzato: Media Plays a Key Role in Informing Citizens About EU Integration

European Union Ambassador to Albania Silvio Gonzato highlighted the crucial role of the media in informing citizens about Albania’s European integration process and the reforms required for EU membership.

He delivered his remarks at the closing event of the training programme “Reporting Effectively on the EU Integration Process,” which aimed to strengthen journalists’ professional skills in covering European affairs.

The project “EU Integration Support (EUIS)” organized the event with financial support from the European Union. Meanwhile, the College of Europe provided the training programme.

Addressing participating journalists, Gonzato stressed that the media remains one of the most important actors in promoting informed public debate and explaining developments related to Albania’s path toward the European Union.

Furthermore, he emphasized that EU integration goes beyond technical and institutional procedures. According to Gonzato, the process affects citizens’ daily lives, the economy, public administration, the justice system, and democratic standards.

He also underlined the importance of accurate, balanced, and fact-based reporting. Such reporting helps citizens better understand the benefits, challenges, and responsibilities that accompany EU membership.

“Access to verified, impartial, and reliable information is essential for democratic societies and for helping citizens understand Albania’s accession process,” Gonzato said.

In addition, the ambassador praised Albania’s progress toward EU membership and highlighted the importance of reforms in advancing negotiations and aligning the country with European standards.

The training programme focused on improving journalists’ knowledge of EU institutions, accession negotiations, and European policies. It also explored reporting techniques and the media’s role in helping citizens understand the reforms linked to Albania’s European future.

Experts from the EU Delegation to Albania, the European Parliament, the College of Europe, and the EUIS project led the training sessions.
