TIRANA, April 10 – Economy and Innovation Minister Delina Ibrahimaj said the government is closely monitoring price movements and will step in to support vulnerable groups. She spoke after a cabinet meeting on Friday, where she presented recent decisions and assessed market developments.
She said authorities are tracking prices in essential food items, especially the basic consumer basket. In recent days, she noted a clear increase in fruit prices, with vegetables showing an even stronger rise. At the same time, she said other product categories have remained stable.
In parallel, Ibrahimaj referred to a recent tax exemption measure for blind persons. She said the legal change ensures continued tax relief for this group. According to her, the policy maintains existing fiscal support within the current legal framework.
She also addressed fuel pricing, noting a recent reduction in diesel prices. She said market inspections take place daily to ensure price lists reflect current changes. She added that inflation reached 2.6 percent in March, describing it as a controlled level despite a slight increase driven mainly by vegetables.
Moreover, she linked current trends to past external shocks, including the post-war period in Ukraine. She said global food inflation previously affected many countries, including Albania. In this context, she said the government remains ready to subsidise vulnerable households if pressures increase further.
Finally, she said geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are expected to have only a limited impact on the Albanian economy. She reiterated that the state will act if price pressures continue, especially to protect groups that cannot absorb higher costs.
