“Green Vjosa” Project Launches for Sustainable Development and Biodiversity Protection

Albania has launched the implementation of the “Green Vjosa” project, a new initiative focused on sustainable development and environmental protection in the Vjosa river basin.

Environment Minister Sofjan Jaupaj held the first meeting of the project’s Steering Committee today.

The project, titled “Green Vjosa – Green and Inclusive Regional Development in the Vjosa National Park Watershed Area,” is being implemented in cooperation with the Germany government.

It aims to link biodiversity conservation with local economic development and improved community well-being.

With €3 million in funding and a timeline until January 31, 2029, the project focuses on strengthening sustainable management of the Vjosa National Park area.

It also supports efforts to include the site in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve network.

The initiative emphasizes active involvement of local communities and the development of nature-based economic activities, including sustainable tourism and responsible use of natural resources.

Jaupaj said the project represents an important model of international cooperation for green development and helps protect one of Europe’s most important river ecosystems while boosting local economic prospects.
