The High Scardus Trail is emerging as a major mountain tourism destination in the Western Balkans. The cross-border route connects Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia.
The German Embassy in Albania says the trail offers more than spectacular mountain landscapes. It also creates economic opportunities for local communities and helps protect the natural and cultural heritage of mountain areas.
“On the High Scardus Trail, the answer goes beyond the enjoyment of spectacular mountain views. In Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia, old mountain paths now form a cross-border hiking route. The trail brings nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts closer to some of the Western Balkans’ most untouched landscapes and the people who call these areas home,” the German Embassy wrote in a social media post.
In Albania, visitors cross Mount Korab and the high-altitude Grama pastures. Along the way, they meet shepherds, stay in family-run guesthouses, and experience the warmth and hospitality of local communities.
Meanwhile, German Development Cooperation and regional partners have supported the development of the High Scardus Trail. Their goal is to promote soft and sustainable tourism that generates income and encourages residents to remain in their hometowns.
“Soft and sustainable tourism can generate income and, in turn, keep people in their hometowns while protecting the natural and cultural heritage that makes these mountain areas unique,” the German Embassy said.
Today, the High Scardus Trail has become an internationally recognized tourism destination.
However, the trail’s greatest success lies in the journey itself. Borders become connections, remote areas become destinations, and local traditions become part of the experience, according to the German Embassy.
The 362-kilometer trail connects the mountains of Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia. Around 45 kilometers of the route run through Albanian territory, mainly along the country’s eastern mountain ranges.
