On June 3, 1917, the pan-Albanian organization Vatra launched the “Save Albania” campaign (“Të shpëtojmë Shqipërinë”) to raise funds in support of the national cause.
The initiative was led by delegates Mehmet Bej Konica and Mihal Turtulli. Furthermore, they stressed that Albania’s future depended on the support of Albanians living in the United States.
In addition, they called for the collection of $40,000 to finance Albanian delegates participating in international forums. The goal was to defend Albania’s national interests during a critical historical period.
Moreover, the campaign slogan “Let us give for our mother” resonated strongly among Albanian communities in America. As a result, 80 Vatra branches, led by Kolë Tromara, mobilized to raise funds.
Finally, the collected money was intended to support a “Salvation Commission” that would represent Albania in Europe during the final phase of World War I and advocate for its national cause.
