Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha has reacted following reports in the Montenegrin media claiming that Serbia and Albania are the two countries referred to by Montenegro’s Prime Minister Milojko Spajić when he warned of possible attempts to destabilize the country through hybrid activities.
Hoxha wrote that the Montenegrin Prime Minister’s statement and the media interpretations that followed should be treated with the necessary caution, stressing that no official accusation has been made against Albania.
“Although no official accusation has been made against Albania, I want to state firmly and clearly that Albania is not and cannot be part of any destabilizing scenario — neither in Montenegro, a neighboring, friendly country, partner and NATO ally, with which we share the same goal of EU membership, nor anywhere else,” Minister Hoxha said.
He stressed that Albania, in his view, “does exactly the opposite,” investing in cooperation, mutual understanding, stability and development in the region, as well as in broader European and Euro-Atlantic cooperation.
Hoxha also said that media interpretations and domestic political debates in a neighboring country should not artificially create problems between Albania and Montenegro.
“We are in constant contact at all levels, and I have done the same in this case through my communications with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ibrahimović, as well as Deputy Prime Minister Nik Gjeloshaj,” he stated.
The Foreign Minister also addressed political actors in Albania, stressing that they can obtain any necessary information from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in order to avoid unnecessary debates.
“Foreign policy always requires calm, prudence and responsibility,” Hoxha concluded.
Montenegrin media outlet “Vijesti,” citing several of its sources, reported that officials from at least two countries in the region were involved. Spajić, meanwhile, stated that Montenegrin authorities possess serious operational security intelligence indicating that the expected closure of new chapters in negotiations with the European Union could be accompanied by coordinated hybrid activities.
