Hoxha-Byrne: Ireland Supports EU Enlargement, Albania Advances Through Reform Agenda

Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha met with Ireland’s Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne, to discuss Albania’s progress and prospects on its path toward European Union membership.

During the meeting, the two officials reviewed developments in Albania’s EU integration process. They also exchanged views on the future of EU enlargement.

In a social media post, Hoxha said he briefed Byrne on the progress Albania has achieved through its reform agenda.

Furthermore, Hoxha reaffirmed Albania’s strong commitment to maintaining the momentum of accession negotiations. He stressed the country’s goal of concluding membership talks by 2027 and achieving EU membership by 2030.

In addition, the ministers discussed the importance of preserving a credible, merit-based enlargement process. They emphasized that the process should reward progress and deliver tangible benefits for both candidate countries and the European Union.

Moreover, Hoxha highlighted the strategic importance of enlargement in today’s geopolitical environment.

“In today’s geopolitical context, enlargement is not only a transformative policy but also a strategic investment in Europe’s security, stability, and resilience,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hoxha expressed Albania’s deep appreciation for Ireland’s continued support for EU enlargement. He also wished Ireland success in its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Overall, the meeting reaffirmed the strong partnership between Albania and Ireland and underscored their shared commitment to advancing the European integration agenda.
