During Thursday’s plenary session on April 16, Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Enea Karakaçi responded to an interpellation requested by Erald Kapri, an MP from the Mundësia Party.
In his remarks, Karakaçi stated that the construction of the new port is not a newly conceived idea, but a strategic project linked to the government’s long-term economic development goals. He emphasized that for many years the Port of Durrës has handled heavy loads, while today it is no longer feasible for an industrial port to continue operating in the city center, due to environmental pollution concerns and limited space for expansion.
According to the minister, the Porto Romano project has been carefully designed by international experts and aims to meet the growing needs of the economy in the coming decades. He added that the new port will not only serve for cargo processing but will also function as a regional logistics hub, with warehouses and distribution facilities expected to host both domestic and foreign companies.
“For decades, the Port of Durrës has carried a heavy burden. There is no port today located in a city center that performs industrial functions, especially considering environmental policies and the need for expansion and development. The Port of Durrës cannot expand. The Porto Romano project is well thought out, designed by international experts, and capable of meeting the significant economic demands of the coming decades,” Karakaçi said.
