Albania’s electricity distribution network is becoming increasingly efficient. The latest data show that power losses have fallen to just 15.9%, the lowest level recorded in recent years.
Losses in the electricity distribution network continued their downward trend during the first half of the year. According to data published by the Distribution System Operator (OSSH), network losses declined to 15.91%, down from 17%during the same period a year earlier, marking an improvement of 1.1 percentage points.
The figures indicate that this is the lowest level of losses ever reported for the January–June period. In 2024, network losses stood at 17.97%, before dropping to 17% a year later and reaching 15.91% in the first six months of this year.
The reduction is generally attributed to investments in the electricity distribution network, infrastructure modernisation, and measures aimed at identifying illegal connections and unauthorised interference with the system. According to OSSH, the improved results are the outcome of continuous work on the network, field inspections, and targeted measures to reduce losses.
The network loss indicator remains one of the key performance measures for the distribution operator, as it directly affects system costs and the overall efficiency of electricity supply.
Technical losses are mainly associated with the physical characteristics of the network and electricity transmission, while non-technical losses include electricity theft and issues related to metering and billing.
