Interior minister Besfort Lamallari: EU membership is a security and geopolitical project

TIRANA, April 3 – Albania continues alignment with the European family, focusing on justice, freedom, and security. The Ministry of Interior outlined concrete steps and results under Chapter 24.

Interior Minister Besfort Lamallari said EU membership is not only an economic and social project. He described it as a security and geopolitical project that benefits both Albania and the European Union.

He stressed that negotiations are both political and technical. Lamallari highlighted cooperation with European law enforcement agencies and the creation of new structures within the State Police, including the Asset Recovery Office for confiscating economic and organised crime assets.

The minister said progress in criminal code reforms has implemented seven EU directives on arms trafficking, child protection, drug trafficking, and border security. He noted that European institutions have recognised these developments.

Operations by the State Police against criminal groups and asset seizures have been reflected in recent European Commission reports. Visa policies were harmonised with the EU, and new mechanisms were introduced to simplify visa procedures.

Lamallari emphasised that Albania’s integration into the EU strengthens both national security and European geopolitical stability.
