Italy’s EUSAIR Presidency Focuses on Western Balkans’ EU Integration

Italy launched its 2026–2027 Presidency of the European Union Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR) with a focus on strengthening regional cooperation and advancing the European integration of the Western Balkans.

During the opening meeting in Rome, participants highlighted the strategic importance of the Adriatic-Ionian region in addressing new geopolitical challenges and supporting Europe’s agenda.

The discussions emphasised the need to turn shared priorities into concrete actions. In particular, participants called for stronger regional cooperation, improved energy and transport connections, enhanced security cooperation and reduced territorial inequalities.

Moreover, the meeting underlined the important role of institutions, local communities and civil society in achieving common regional goals.

A key priority of the discussions was accelerating the European integration process of Western Balkan countries. Participants described EU enlargement as a strategic investment in the region’s long-term stability, resilience, prosperity and sustainable development.
