Jaupaj in Skopje: Protecting Lake Ohrid a Priority for Albania-North Macedonia Cooperation

Protecting Lake Ohrid and strengthening cross-border environmental cooperation were at the center of a meeting between Albania’s Environment Minister Sofjan Jaupaj and his North Macedonian counterpart Muamet Hoxha in Skopje.

The meeting took place during a regional gathering of chief negotiators and officials responsible for European integration.

Jaupaj said the two sides discussed the implementation of UNESCO recommendations for protecting Lake Ohrid. The lake represents an important natural and cultural heritage site shared by the two countries.

The ministers also discussed new cross-border projects in the Korab-Koritnik and Šar Mountains areas.

They also addressed waste management and the exchange of expertise to modernize the sector in line with European Union standards.

“Nature knows no borders. Regional cooperation remains essential for achieving lasting results and advancing together on the path toward the EU,” Jaupaj said.
