Environment Minister Sofjan Jaupaj signed today a technical cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Environment and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The agreement will strengthen cooperation between Albania and IUCN. It will also bring IUCN’s technical expertise into Albania’s European Union integration process, particularly the work under Chapter 27 on environment and climate change.
Through the agreement, IUCN will support the Ministry of Environment in meeting the closing benchmarks for Chapter 27. The partnership will also help Albania align its environmental framework with the European Union acquis.
In addition, the agreement will support the development of concrete projects to protect nature and biodiversity. It will also promote projects that restore ecosystems across the country.
Jaupaj described the agreement as a new partnership for the protection of Albania’s natural heritage. He also highlighted the progress in cooperation between Albania and IUCN in recent years.
“Since Albania became a state member of IUCN in 2024, our cooperation with the international organization has intensified. We have benefited from its world-class technical expertise,” Jaupaj said.
Meanwhile, the minister stressed that the new agreement will help Albania take further concrete steps toward European environmental standards. He also said the partnership will support efforts to protect the country’s natural resources for future generations.
The agreement therefore links Albania’s EU integration priorities with practical measures to protect nature, preserve biodiversity and restore ecosystems.
