Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu strongly condemned the removal of the Israeli flag from the Embassy of Israel in Tirana during a protest on Friday evening.
According to Koçiu, the act represents an unacceptable provocation. Furthermore, she said it violates fundamental norms of respect for diplomatic missions and contradicts the principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
In addition, Koçiu stressed that the incident goes beyond an attack on a state symbol. She warned that actions targeting the identity of a people or encouraging hostility based on ethnic or religious grounds can fuel intolerance and antisemitism.
Moreover, she noted that Europe has experienced the consequences of such attitudes during some of the darkest periods in its history. Therefore, she emphasized that there is no place for antisemitism or hatred in democratic societies.
Meanwhile, Koçiu reaffirmed that Albania remains a welcoming country and a reliable international partner. She also stated that the country maintains zero tolerance for antisemitism and hate speech.
Furthermore, she described the incident as an isolated and shameful act that contradicts Albania’s long tradition of harmony, mutual respect, and protection of others. She added that these values have guided the Albanian people throughout their history.
Finally, Koçiu expressed full solidarity with the Embassy of the State of Israel in Tirana. At the same time, she reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to international law, the protection of diplomatic missions, and the promotion of European values such as tolerance, respect, and peaceful coexistence.
