TIRANA, August 6 – Kosova’s Assembly suspended its constitutive session after Self-Determination leader Albin Kurti requested more time for political talks on a candidate for the country’s next president.
Kurti told lawmakers that additional time was necessary to allow negotiations to continue. He said the parties needed more time to reach an agreement on a new president.
Meanwhile, Kurti stressed that the institutional formation process should not lead to another dissolution of parliament or another round of early elections. He argued that a new election would harm the economy and delay the establishment of state institutions.
Earlier in the session, all 120 deputies of the 11th legislature took the oath of office and officially began their new mandates.
In addition, lawmakers unanimously approved the report of the temporary committee responsible for verifying the quorum and parliamentary mandates. The report passed with 120 votes in favor.
The suspension leaves political parties with additional time to continue negotiations before the Assembly resumes the process of establishing Kosova’s new institutions.
