The Constitutional Court of Kosova has ruled that the 60-day deadline for electing the President of the Republic began on August 8 and ends on October 6, 2026.
The court issued the ruling on Wednesday, September 23, after reviewing a request from the Democratic Party of Kosova. The request concerned several Assembly of Kosova decisions. It challenged the election of the Assembly speaker, the procedure for electing deputy speakers, the confirmation of the 11th legislature and the election of the government.
The court found that the Assembly of Kosova completed its constitution after the 30-day constitutional deadline had expired. According to the ruling, this triggered the constitutional deadlines for electing a president when the post is vacant and for forming a government. However, the court ruled that the Assembly’s September 13, 2026 decision to elect the Government of the Republic of Kosova does not violate Article 95 of the Constitution. The court therefore considered the decision lawful. It also called on Assembly members to elect a deputy speaker from the second-largest parliamentary group as soon as possible, in line with the Constitution.
