TIRANA, April 7 – Prime Minister Albin Kurti of Kosova said after a two-hour meeting with Democratic League of Kosova leader Lumir Abdixhiku that the discussions produced no new developments.
Kurti remained optimistic that talks could eventually lead to an agreement but stressed that today’s meeting did not yield results. He highlighted the challenge posed by one party holding 81 seats while the Movement for Self-Determination has 57 seats, leaving them short of the 80 votes needed to elect the president in the 120-member Assembly.
“We no longer face the challenge of 61 deputies to form a government. The real challenge is that one party controls 81 deputies and chooses the president alone. We tried earlier, formalizing our candidate Glauk Konjufca for less than 30 hours, while the opposing candidate Fatmira Mulhaxha-Kollçaku was also formalized. I remain optimistic that discussions can produce an agreement, but that was not the case today,” Kurti said.
He added that proposals and initiatives from other parties would clarify names once results are concrete. Kurti intends to meet with Democratic Party of Kosova leader Bedri Hamza, hoping the party will formally present its two candidates. He criticized the party for demanding blind trust without revealing candidates in advance, which he said makes agreement impossible.
The presidency remains the main issue in Kosova’s political scene. The Movement for Self-Determination’s parliamentary majority is not sufficient to elect the president, keeping the process unresolved for months.
