TIRANA, July 10 – Kosova’s political leaders began talks on Thursday to establish new institutions following the snap parliamentary elections held on 7 June.
Acting Prime Minister and Self-Determination Movement leader Albin Kurti met Democratic Party of Kosova leader Bedri Hamza at the Assembly. Later in the day, Kurti is due to meet Democratic League of Kosova leader Lumir Abdixhiku.
Kurti said he expected constructive discussions that would help establish the institutions of the new legislature. Meanwhile, Hamza expressed hope that the talks would strengthen institutional stability and support the country’s progress. He added that the discussions would focus on principles rather than political positions.
The meetings come two days after authorities certified the election results. Earlier efforts to elect a new president failed, prompting the snap vote.
However, Alliance for the Future of Kosova leader Ardian Gjini declined Kurti’s invitation. He said his party had already presented six conditions for supporting the formation of new institutions.
Political analyst Ilir Deda welcomed the dialogue. He urged the leaders to reach an agreement quickly, warning that new elections would harm the country.
According to the final results, Self-Determination won 53 seats, followed by the Democratic Party of Kosova with 22, the Democratic League of Kosova with 18, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosova with seven. Parliament must now elect its speaker, form a government, and choose a president within the constitutional deadlines.
