With 93 votes in favor, none against, and no abstentions, the Assembly of Kosovo approved the ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kosovo and the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania for the Mediterranean Games Prishtina 2030.
The Minister of Sports, Blerim Gashani, while presenting the draft law, also explained its benefits.
“The organization of the Mediterranean Games Prishtina 2030 is a strategic achievement for the Republic of Kosovo, placing it on the map of major international sporting events and demonstrating the institutional capacity to take on responsibilities of this level.
In this context, the agreement with Albania represents a functional and reasonable solution for organizing sailing disciplines, reflecting the geographical reality and the need for regional cooperation. Since Kosovo does not have access to the sea, the inclusion of the city of Durrës as a venue for water sports is a logical choice and in line with international standards for organizing multisport events.
This agreement does not undermine Kosovo’s role as host; on the contrary, it strengthens it by demonstrating flexibility and the capacity to organize inclusive games in cooperation with strategic partners. The agreement clearly defines the division of responsibilities and duties, where Kosovo, as the host country, bears the main financial burden for organizing the games overall. This includes covering the relevant organizational and logistical expenses, ensuring that required international standards are fully met,” he said.
Democratic Party of Kosovo MP, Arbnora Saliu, stated that they support the draft law.
“Regarding the draft law on the Mediterranean Games Prishtina 2030, which came for review a few days ago, you know that we provided our remarks concerning procurement procedures, auditing, reporting of budget expenditures, as well as staff recruitment. We addressed these concerns through four amendments. The same concerns were also raised by the EU Office in Kosovo. However, the majority here voted against our proposed amendments, and unfortunately the draft law passed in its original form.
Today, we brought to vote draft law no. 10 L-040 on the ratification of the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kosovo and the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania for the Mediterranean Games Prishtina 2030. It foresees cooperation with Albania for the development of some water sports competitions in Durrës.
Given the importance of this agreement for the development of the Mediterranean Games, we as the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party of Kosovo support it,” she said.
Democratic League of Kosovo MP, Adelina Thaçi, said they had raised concerns but support the agreement.
“As a member of the Committee for Culture, I have raised my concerns regarding this interstate agreement, but the Democratic League of Kosovo supports this international agreement between Albania and Kosovo and their organization, of course like any other international agreement that is in the country’s interest,” she said.
Also, Alliance for the Future of Kosovo MP, Time Kadrijaj, supported it.
“I consider it of special importance and we are pleased that we finally have an agreement between Kosovo and Albania, knowing that cooperation with the Republic of Albania has been continuously lacking from this government,” she said.
