Kosovo President Visits Families of Former KLA Leaders, Pledges Institutional Support

Kosovo President Justina Shiroka-Pula met on Tuesday with the families of former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi, who face trial at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

Shiroka-Pula stood by the families and acknowledged the hardship they face. She pledged continued institutional support for the former KLA leaders, within Kosovo’s legal powers. She also stressed that the judicial process preserves their right to appeal.

The president described the KLA’s fight as a struggle for freedom against repression, violence and crimes that the Serbian regime committed against Kosovo’s population. She called for efforts to preserve historical truth and uphold the dignity of those who fought for Kosovo’s freedom.

Shiroka-Pula also pledged to address the Law on the Specialist Chambers within the applicable legal deadlines. “The families are not alone on this journey,” she said. She reaffirmed that the presidency would remain open to the families and support their pursuit of justice within its constitutional and legal mandate.
