Kumbaro Urges Students to Reject Violence Amid Protests

Education Minister Mirela Kumbaro urged students to reject violence as protests entered their second day. She expressed deep concern over attacks on the Education Ministry and other public institutions.

“Physical clashes and property destruction must never replace words, arguments and dialogue,” Kumbaro said.

The minister defended students’ right to protest and demand better conditions. However, she stressed that peaceful demonstrations must not turn into attacks on public buildings, property or employees.

Kumbaro also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to dialogue. Despite the extensive damage, she said the ministry would continue to welcome students, universities and parents to discuss their concerns and proposals.

Meanwhile, she highlighted the financial support available to students. More than 12,000 students from disadvantaged families receive financial assistance each year. In addition, over 40,000 benefit from reduced or waived tuition fees. Hundreds of high-achieving students and those enrolled in priority programmes also receive scholarships and monthly payments of €500, equivalent to the minimum wage.

Kumbaro said protesters had damaged equipment and documents after setting fire to the ministry’s ground floor. Although the damage has left the area unusable until repairs, she confirmed that ministry staff remained at work and would continue to engage with students.

“Bars that smash windows solve no problems, just as paving stones cannot build the future,” she said. Instead, Kumbaro urged students to build their future through knowledge, dialogue and responsibility.

“Dear students, take care of yourselves and do not let anyone push you towards violence. Your voice matters when you express it through ideas and arguments,” she concluded.
