TIRANA, April 8 – On April 8, 1937, Gjergj Fishta’s epic poem Lahuta e Malcís was published in full. It is one of the most remarkable works in Albanian literature.
The poem contains 15,613 verses. It is the result of thirty years of work. Fishta combined historical documentation with poetic art.
The work describes border conflicts to defend Albanian lands from Montenegrin neighbors in Hot and Grudë. It recounts the League of Prizren, diplomatic efforts after the Congress of Berlin, hopes of the Young Turk Revolution, and challenges of the Balkan Wars. The narrative reaches the declaration of Albanian Independence of 1912.
Beyond its literary value, Lahuta e Malcís serves as a poetic archive of collective memory. History and art are intertwined to build a national narrative. Through the poem, Fishta documents events and inspires pride and national awareness. The work turns poetry into a powerful tool for Albanian identity.
Fishta’s style, based on the Gheg dialect, literary figures, and epic rhythm, makes Lahuta e Malcís a unique work. It preserves the authenticity of the Albanian language and tradition.
