Lorik Cana Disappointed by Support for Mladić: Serbia Is Not Learning from the Past

Former Albania national team captain Lorik Cana has strongly reacted in an Instagram post, commenting on a photograph of a young woman and expressing concern over how younger generations are confronting the past and relations between peoples.

Cana said the photograph made him “deeply sad,” stressing that the younger generation should be the one to bring hope, perspective and a shared, peaceful future between peoples.

“The photo of this young woman makes me deeply sad, for a generation that should bring hope and the prospect of a shared and peaceful future, with sincere ties between our peoples,” Cana wrote.

He stressed that young people did not experience the war of 1992 but, according to him, have been raised to inherit hatred and to misinterpret figures from the past.

“In 1992, she had not yet been born. They did not experience that war, but were raised to inherit hatred, to mistakenly regard as a patriot a criminal responsible for the most horrific crime against humanity since World War II, and to see a genocide conviction as an insult to the nation!” the former Albania captain said.

At the end of his statement, Cana called for reflection and change, saying that all nations have a responsibility to learn from the past and build a better future for younger generations.

“All nations have their homework to do for future generations, but Serbia is not learning from the past and continues to live in its troubled past instead of thinking about changing its policies!!!” Cana concluded.
