Malaj: Stronger Business Dialogue Key to Competitiveness and Formalization

Finance Minister Petrit Malaj met tourism businesses in Durrës on Monday to discuss sector challenges and cooperation with tax authorities.

Malaj said stronger dialogue with businesses remains essential to improve competitiveness and further formalize the tourism sector. He added that these efforts will bring more value to Albania’s economy.

He described tourism as one of the country’s strongest economic sectors. He said tourism supports jobs, increases tax revenue and helps local development. It also supports agriculture and food processing.

Malaj said the government is reviewing new incentives for the sector. He stressed that all measures must align with European Union standards.

Tax administration data showed growth in tourism-related business activity in Durrës during 2025. The figures also showed higher employment, increased salary declarations and stronger revenues.

Officials also highlighted Durrës’ potential to expand tourism beyond summer through cultural, sports and health tourism, marine economy projects and year-round events.

Malaj said the 2026 tourism sector plan will continue to support formalization and sustainable development. The plan includes targeted inspections, accurate income declarations, electronic invoicing and the use of advanced technology and artificial intelligence to identify undeclared or high-risk taxpayers.
