The National Theatre of Opera and Ballet today commemorated the 115th anniversary of the birth of “People’s Artist” Marie Kraja, describing her as one of the most prominent voices in Albanian opera and one of the founding figures of the institution.
Marie Kraja was born on Sept. 24, 1911. She studied singing at the Graz Conservatory in Austria. After completing her studies, she returned to Albania and began an active career in concerts and education. She dedicated her life to Albanian musical art.
Through her performances, Kraja also promoted Albanian music on international stages in Vienna, Bari, Munich, Florence and other European cities.
Kraja earned recognition for her beautiful lyrical voice, expressive temperament and clear, crystal-like tone. She became one of the first soloists of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet and performed in the institution’s first-ever premiere.
Moreover, her repertoire included operatic roles, arias, romances, concert pieces and more than 300 traditional songs from different Albanian regions. With great dedication, she preserved, performed and promoted Albania’s rich tradition of urban folk songs.
Kraja also made an important contribution to music education. She passed her knowledge and experience on to generations of young singers.
For her outstanding artistic career, Marie Kraja received the title of “People’s Artist,” the First Class “Naim Frashëri” Order, the “Great Master of Labor” Medal and the First Class Republic Award.
