The Academy of Sciences of Albania today marked the 119th anniversary of the birth of Dhimitër Pasko, known in literature as Mitrush Kuteli. Kuteli was born in Pogradec on September 13, 1907. He became one of Albania’s most distinguished writers, translators, economists and scholars.
He made major contributions to literature, journalism, folklore and literary criticism. He also played an important role in Albania’s economic and financial development.
Kuteli began publishing in the Albanian press abroad in 1924. Two years later, he helped establish the Albanian Students’ Society in Thessaloniki.
In 1928, he moved to Bucharest and studied economic sciences. At the same time, he worked as an accountant and continued studying literature, criticism and folklore.
He also edited the newspaper “Shqipëria e Re” in Constanța from 1928 to 1933. In 1929, he launched its “Literary Notes” section. Kuteli earned his degree in 1931. Three years later, he received a doctorate in banking and monetary sciences with the highest distinction.
During his years in Romania, he worked as a senior Finance Ministry official. He also headed the Cernăuți Bank.
Meanwhile, Kuteli continued to contribute to Albania’s economic development. He focused particularly on the national currency and the development of the Bank of Albania.
As a writer, he left a lasting mark on Albanian culture. He wrote prose and poetry, studied folklore and translated major works of world literature. He also published extensively on economics and finance.
Kuteli died in Tirana on May 4, 1967. The Academy of Sciences later honored him with the title “Honor of the Academy of Sciences” for his outstanding contribution to Albanian culture and intellectual life.
