Montenegrin film in Albanian “Nderi” officially nominated for an Oscar

The Montenegrin film Nderi premieres for the first time in Tirana and Prishtina. The director, Nikola Vukčević, presents it as Montenegro’s official Oscar® candidate (98th Academy Awards). The film has won 20 international awards at 31 festivals. These include the Cairo International Film Festival, IFFI GOA, and Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Nderi was a huge success in Montenegro. It sold over 20,000 tickets. In Tirana, the premiere takes place on April 8 at Cineplexx. Prishtina will host it on April 9.

The story is based on real events from World War II. It follows a young Montenegrin Orthodox boy. He escapes a fascist unit and finds shelter in an Albanian Muslim family’s home. The head of the family, Nuredin Doka, faces a difficult choice. He must risk his family’s life to save the boy or break the sacred principle of besa.

The main cast includes Edon Rizvanolli, Alban Ukaj, Xhejlane Tërbunja, Selman Jusufi, Nikola Ristanovski, and Elez Adžović.

At a press conference in Tirana, director Vukčević and Esmira Beqoviq from the Montenegrin Embassy spoke about the film. Beqoviq said, “It is a special honor to premiere this award-winning film in Tirana. It coincides with Montenegro’s 20th independence anniversary.”

Vukčević highlighted the film’s record in Montenegro. “The audience embraced the story. It celebrates differences and shows how we accept each other. I believe Albanian viewers will appreciate it in their language.”

He also praised Edon Rizvanolli. Rizvanolli trained at the prestigious Strasberg Institute in New York, one of the top film schools of the 20th century.

The film will continue to screen in Tirana. Later, it will show in Belgrade and Podgorica, Montenegro.
