The European Union Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, announced in a post on X that Montenegro is very close to joining the European Union.
In her post, Kos emphasized that Member States have decided to begin drafting Montenegro’s Accession Treaty to the EU, a process which, according to her, is accelerating reforms.
“Montenegro’s place within the EU is now taking shape. Today, Member States decided to begin drafting Montenegro’s EU Accession Treaty. This is a major step on the path to EU membership, a clear recognition of Montenegro’s progress and an encouragement to accelerate reforms.
It also provides an opportunity to draw lessons from past enlargements and to incorporate new and stronger safeguards into future accession treaties to prevent backsliding on the rule of law and fundamental values,” she wrote.
