MPs Return to Parliament Tomorrow, Protest to Be Held Outside

MPs have ended their summer break. The first sitting of the new parliamentary session will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.

During the sitting, which is expected to last only a few minutes, Speaker of Parliament Niko Peleshi and the heads of the parliamentary groups will deliver remarks.

Ahead of the afternoon sitting, the Conference of Chairpersons will meet at 11:00 a.m. at the Presidency of Parliament to discuss and approve the draft work programme of Parliament and the draft schedule of proceedings.

Territorial and electoral reforms are expected to be among the main focuses of this parliamentary session.

The Socialist majority has submitted a draft proposal to Parliament calling for the country to be divided into 46 municipalities, instead of the current 61.

The proposal has faced opposition from residents of the 15 municipalities affected by the new map.

The start of the new parliamentary session will also be accompanied by a protest outside the Parliament building.

Citizens who have been protesting on the boulevard for 100 days have announced that they will gather near the Parliament building at the start of the session, as well as during every other parliamentary sitting throughout September.
