Albania aims to significantly expand its railway network in the coming years. The country plans to improve connections between Tirana, Durrës, the airport and regional transport corridors by 2030.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Enkelejda Muçaj said today that the Tirana-Durrës railway and the link to Tirana International Airport aim to become operational by 2027. Meanwhile, authorities plan to complete the Vorë-Hani i Hotit and Durrës-Rrogozhinë sections by 2030.
“By 2030, we expect the projects, including the Tirana-Durrës line and the airport link, to become a reality. We hope to have a rehabilitated railway line by 2027. Meanwhile, the additional sections include the four-kilometer extension to bring the railway station back to Tirana. We have divided the work into different segments. However, we hope to have the Tirana-Durrës line and the airport connection operational by 2027, except for any unforeseen issues that we cannot identify at this stage. At the same time, we have made significant progress with contracting and all internal procedures,” Muçaj said in a television interview with “Scan”.
Regarding the Vorë-Hani i Hotit and Durrës-Rrogozhinë lines, the deputy minister said authorities have planned their completion by 2030. She added that institutions are working to avoid delays during implementation.
According to Muçaj, the projects should deliver concrete results for citizens during this period.
In parallel with infrastructure investments, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy is also working to meet Albania’s objectives under its negotiations with the European Union.
Muçaj said Albania aims to technically close its work on Chapter 14, “Transport Policy,” by March 2027. Meanwhile, she expressed expectations for positive consideration from the European Union on Chapter 21, “Trans-European Networks,” by the end of this year.
Finally, the railway projects and alignment with European transport standards form part of Albania’s broader objective to integrate into European transport networks. They also aim to improve national and regional connectivity.
