New fishing rules aim to improve traceability and quality

TIRANA, May 21 – The Council of Ministers has approved a new decision on the organisation and functioning of the market for fisheries and aquaculture products. It also defines the form and content of production and marketing plans for the sector.

The decision was proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. It aims to strengthen the sustainable management of marine resources. In addition, it aims to increase market transparency and improve the competitiveness of domestic producers in the supply chain.

In this context, fisheries and aquaculture producer organisations will play a central role in production planning, marketing, and market coordination. They will operate through mandatory plans approved by the relevant ministry.

The decision also provides for the creation and strengthening of intersectoral organisations. These organisations will improve coordination between producers, processors, and traders. Moreover, they will increase product quality and traceability in the market. At the same time, it introduces new marketing and labelling standards. These include mandatory information on origin, production method, catch area, and product characteristics.

Furthermore, the decision sets out mechanisms to stabilise the market. These include financial support for temporary storage of products when the minimum sales price is not reached. They also include measures to manage supply.

Implementation will be supervised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, fisheries service institutions, and inspection structures. These structures will ensure compliance with the new rules and sustainability objectives.

The decision enters into force after publication in the Official Gazette.
