North Macedonia’s Democratic Union for Integration leader condemns Serbian minister’s remarks

TIRANA, July 15 – Ali Ahmeti, leader of the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration, a political party in North Macedonia, condemned remarks by Serbian minister Snezhana Paunovic. During a television interview, Paunovic said she would have ethnically cleansed Kosova in 1998 if she had been in Slobodan Milosevic’s position.

In a social media post, Ahmeti called the statement shocking, inhumane and unacceptable. He said it insults the victims of the Kosova war. He also argued that it reflects the policies associated with Milosevic, who faced international justice over crimes committed during his regime. Meanwhile, Ahmeti said calls for ethnic cleansing have no place in the 21st century. He added that such views conflict with democratic, European and humanitarian values. He also rejected any attempt to deny or glorify genocidal policies.

The Democratic Union for Integration leader said history had already judged such ideologies. He stressed that the Kosova people’s resistance, together with the Kosova Liberation Army and international allies, secured Kosova’s freedom. Finally, Ahmeti said those who still dream of ethnic cleansing should remember that hatred always fails, while freedom and justice prevail.
