Nufi: Air Force Modernization Remains Strategic Priority

Defense Minister Ermal Nufi marks the 75th anniversary of Albania’s Military Aviation at NATO’s Kuçova Air Base. Senior officials, military leaders, and veterans attend the ceremony.

Nufi announces the reopening of the Aviation School in Vlorë after two decades. The school will train military and civilian pilots, as well as air traffic controllers. He says the move preserves tradition and prepares new generations.

He places modernization of existing Air Force capacities at the center of national security. He confirms upgrades to radar systems and stronger air defense capabilities.

Nufi calls Kuçova Air Base a key strategic asset for Albania and NATO. He says investments in technology and equipment increase readiness and interoperability with allies. He highlights the development of drone capabilities and the strengthening of air defense systems.

He honors pilots, technicians, and specialists for their service and sacrifice.

Nufi recalls the first Albanian military flight on April 24, 1951. Pilot Peço Polena completes the mission with a JAK-9P aircraft. Authorities establish the first fighter squadron that same day in Tirana.
