Defence ministers from six Adriatic and Ionian countries met in Venice to discuss stronger regional cooperation in defence and security. The participating countries were Albania, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia.
The ministers focused on the increasingly complex strategic environment. They also discussed ways to strengthen regional coordination and joint capabilities.
During the meeting, Defence Minister Ermal Nufi stressed the importance of strengthening the initiative as a practical mechanism. He said it can improve coordination, cooperation and joint capabilities across the Adriatic-Ionian region. In addition, he noted that stronger cooperation can help the countries respond more effectively to new security and defence challenges.
Nufi also reaffirmed Albania’s support for continued discussions on the European Continental Defence Initiative (CEDI). He said the initiative would enable Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security, while complementing NATO and maintaining strong transatlantic ties.
“ADRION and CEDI are two complementary directions. One focuses on deeper practical cooperation in the Adriatic and Ionian region, while the other strengthens political and strategic coordination in Europe,” Nufi said.
He added that Albania remains ready to contribute actively. The country aims to turn shared ambitions into practical cooperation, stronger capabilities and concrete results for European security and beyond.
The Adriatic-Ionian Initiative serves as a regional mechanism for cooperation in defence and security. It aims to strengthen regional cooperation and maritime security across the Adriatic-Ionian area.
Meanwhile, ADRION focuses on practical cooperation, coordination, interoperability and the development of joint capabilities among Albania, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia.
