“One House, Two Eras”: Former home of Albanian poet Migjeni links his legacy with a religious mission

TIRANA, August 28 – The former home of Albanian poet Migjeni still stands in Shkodër. The building now links the poet’s literary legacy with the religious mission of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Child Jesus.

Migjeni remains one of Albania’s most important poets. His work focused on poverty, hardship and the struggles of ordinary people. His writing reflected the social realities of the period in which he lived.

The building once belonged to the Trimeqev family, whose doctor was related to Migjeni’s family. According to information held by the sisters, Migjeni lived there for a period of his life as a welcomed guest. A plaque on the facade now recalls his connection with the house.

The building no longer contains personal objects belonging to the poet. However, missionary sister Lula Mecaj said the house continued to serve the local community. She said the sisters kept its doors open to local families and children throughout the year.

Mecaj also said the building should not be viewed simply as a cultural monument. She described it as a living home where 4 Franciscan sisters currently live and carry out their religious mission. She linked its openness to the Albanian tradition of hospitality.

Migjeni’s memory also remains visible in central Shkodër. His bust stands in front of the theatre named after him, preserving a lasting reminder of the poet’s connection with the city.
