Opera “Rozafa” Makes World Premiere at Albania’s National Opera and Ballet Theatre

The National Theatre of Opera, Ballet and Folk Ensemble (TKOBAP) hosted the world premiere of the opera “Rozafa” last night, bringing one of Albania’s most powerful cultural legends to the stage.

The opera features music by Ndoc Pistulli, a libretto by Zef Zorba, and orchestration by Gridi Kraja. The production combines mythology and music, creating an artistic experience where history, legend, and performance come together.

Gridi Kraja led the musical direction, while Andis Gjoni created the staging and scenography. The cast included soloists Nina Muho, Denis Skura, Armando Likaj, Solen Alla, and Bledar Domi, accompanied by the TKOBAP Symphony Orchestra and Choir.

The opera has a remarkable story behind its creation. Shkodra-born composer Ndoc Pistulli, a gifted musician with perfect pitch, joined Albania’s first opera, “Mrika,” at the age of 16 as its first pianist.

At only 25 years old, Pistulli began composing “Rozafa.” Decades later, the opera finally reached the stage for the first time, marking an important moment for Albanian lyrical art.

The world premiere of “Rozafa” brings back a valuable work that remained away from the stage for years. It also pays tribute to Albania’s musical and cultural heritage.
